MARCH-APRIL2026 ftercombingthroughNASA’s James Webb Space Telescope’sarchiveofsweep- ing extragalactic cosmic fields, a small team of astronomers at the UniversityofMissourisaystheyhave identifiedasampleofgalaxiesthat have a previously unseen combina- tion of features. Principal investigator Haojing Yan comparesthediscoverytoaninfa- mous oddball in another branch of science: biology’s taxonomy-defying platypus. “Itseemsthatwe’veiden- tified a population of galaxies that we can’t categorize, they are so odd. On the one hand they are ex- tremely tiny and compact, like a point source, yet we do not see the characteristicsofaquasar,anactive supermassive black hole, which is whatmostdistantpointsources are,” said Yan. “I looked at these characteristics and thought, this is like looking at a platypus. You think that these things should not exist together, but there it is right in front of you, and it’s undeniable,” Yan said. The team whittled down a sample of 2,000 sources across sev- eral Webb surveys to identify nine point-likesourcesthatexisted12to 12.6billionyearsago(comparedto - ﻣﺎﺭﺱ ﺃﺑﺮﻳﻞ 2 0 2 6 ﻌـﺪ ﻓﺤــﺺ دﻗﻴ ـﻖ ﻷرﺷ ـﻴﻒ ﺗﻠﺴــﻜﻮ ب ﺟﻴﻤﺲ وﻳﺐ اﻟﻔﻀﺎﺋﻲ اﻟﺘﺎﺑﻊ ﻟﻨﺎﺳﺎ واﻟـﺬي ﻳﻀﻢ ﺣﻘﻮﻻُ ﻛﻮﻧﻴﺔ واﺳﻌﺔ اﻟﻨﻄـﺎق ﺧـﺎرج ا ﺠﺮة أﻋﻠﻦ ﻓﺮﻳﻖ ﺻﻐ ﻣﻦ ﻋﻠﻤﺎء اﻟﻔﻠﻚ ﰲ ﺟﺎﻣﻌﺔ ﻣﻴﺴﻮري أﻧﻬﻢ اﻛﺘﺸﻔﻮا ﻋﻴﻨـﺔ ﻣـﻦ ا ﺠﺮات اﻟﺘﻲ ﺗﺘﻤﻴﺰ ﺑﻤﺰﻳﺞ ﻏ ﻣﺴﺒﻮق ﻣﻦ اﻟﺨﺼـﺎﺋﺺ . وﻳﻘـﺎرن اﻟﺒﺎﺣـﺚ اﻟﺮﺋـ ﻴﴘ ـ ﻫـﺎوﺟﻴﻨﻎ ﻳـﺎن ﻫـﺬا اﻻﻛﺘﺸـﺎف ﺑﻈـﺎﻫﺮة ﻏﺮﻳﺒﺔ ﰲ ﻓﺮع آﺧﺮ ﻣﻦ ﻓﺮوع اﻟﻌﻠﻮم : ﺣﻴﻮان ﺧﻠﺪ ا ﺎء اﻟـﺬي ﻳﺘﺤـﺪى اﻟﺘﺼـﻨﻴﻒ ﰲ ﻋﻠـﻢ ﺧﻠﺪ ا ﺎء اﻟـﺬي ﻳﺘﺤـﺪى اﻟﺘﺼـﻨﻴﻒ ﰲ ﻋﻠـﻢ اﻷﺣﻴﺎء . ﻳﻘﻮل ﻳـﺎن " : ﻳﺒـﺪو أﻧﻨـﺎ اﻛﺘﺸـﻔﻨﺎ ﻣﺠ ﻤﻮﻋــﺔ ﻣــﻦ ا ﺠــﺮات اﻟﺘـﻲ ﻻ ﻳﻤﻜﻨﻨـﺎ ﺗﺼﻨﻴﻔ ﻬﺎ ﻓﻬﻲ ﻏﺮﻳﺒﺔ ﻟﻠﻐﺎﻳﺔ . ﻓﻤـﻦ ﻧﺎﺣﻴـﺔ ﻫﻲ ﺻﻐ ة ﺟﺪ اً وﻣﻀﻐﻮﻃﺔ ﻣﺜـﻞ ﻣﺼـﺪر ﻧﻘﻄﻲ وﻣﻊ ذﻟﻚ ﻻ ﻧﺮى ﺧﺼﺎﺋﺺ اﻟﻜـﻮازار وﻫﻮ ﺛﻘﺐ أﺳﻮد ﻓﺎﺋﻖ اﻟﻜﺘﻠﺔ ﻧﺸﻂ وﻫﻮ ﻣﺎ ﺗﻤﺜﻠﻪ ﻣﻌﻈﻢ ا ﺼﺎدر ا ﻟﻨﻘﻄﻴـﺔ اﻟﺒﻌﻴـﺪة ." ﻗـﺎل ﻳـﺎن " : ﻧﻈـﺮت إﱃ ﻫـﺬه اﻟﺨﺼـﺎﺋﺺ وﻓﻜﺮتُ، ﻫﺬا أﺷﺒﻪ ﺑـﺎ ﻟﻨﻈﺮ إﱃ ﺧﻠـﺪ ا ـﺎء . ووﺟﺪت أن ﻫﺬا أﺷﺒﻪ ﺑﺎﻟﻨﻈﺮ إﱃ ﺧﻠﺪ ا ـﺎء . ﺗﻌﺘﻘﺪ أن ﻫﺬ ه اﻷﺷـﻴﺎء ﻻ ﻳﻤﻜـﻦ أن ﺗﻮﺟـﺪ ﻣﻌﺎً ﻟﻜﻨﻬـﺎ ﻣﻮﺟـﻮدة أﻣﺎﻣـﻚ ﻣﺒـﺎﴍة وﻻ ﻳﻤﻜﻦ إﻧﻜﺎرﻫﺎ ." ﻗﺎم اﻟﻔﺮﻳﻖ ﺑﺘﻘﻠﻴﺺ ﻋ ﻴﻨﺔ ﻣـﻦ 2000 ﻣﺼـﺪر ﻋـﱪ ﻋـﺪة ﻣﺴـﻮﺣﺎت ﻟﺘﻠﺴـﻜﻮب وﻳـﺐ ﻟﺘﺤﺪﻳـﺪ ﺗﺴـﻌﺔ ﻣﺼـﺎدر ﻧﻘﻄﻴﺔ اﻟﺸﻜﻞ وُﺟﺪت ﻗﺒﻞ 12 إﱃ 12.6 ﻣﻠﻴﺎر )ﺳﻨﺔ ﻣﻘﺎرﻧﺔً ﺑﻌﻤـﺮ اﻟﻜـﻮن اﻟﺒـﺎﻟﻎ 13.8 ﻣﻠﻴـﺎر ﺳـﻨﺔ ﺗ(. ﻌﻄـﻲ اﻟﺒﻴﺎﻧـﺎت اﻟﻄﻴﻔﻴـﺔ ﻋﻠﻤﺎء اﻟﻔﻠﻚ ﻣﻌﻠﻮﻣﺎت أﻛﺜﺮ ﻣﻤـﺎ ﻳﻤﻜـﻨﻬﻢ
