Thetechnique,whichinvolvesmeas- uring the decrease in brightness of thestar-planetsystemastheplanet movesbehindthestar,issimilarto thatusedtosearchforatmospheres in the TRAPPIST-1 system and on otherrockyworlds.IfTOI-561bisa bare rock with no atmosphere to carryheataroundtothenightside, its dayside temperature should be approaching4,900degreesFahren- heit(2,700degreesCelsius).Butthe NIRSpecobservationsshowthatthe planet’sdaysideappearstobecloser to3,200degreesFahrenheit(1,800 degrees Celsius) — still extremely hot,butfarcoolerthanexpected.To explaintheresults,theteamconsid- ered a few different scenarios.
