JANUARY-FEBRUARY2026          Laser trial run kickstarts new era of interferometry byESO BárbaraFerreira our lasers were projected into the skies above the EuropeanSouthern Observatory’s (ESO’s) ParanalsiteinChile.Thelasersare eachusedtocreateanartificialstar, which astronomers use to measure andthencorrecttheblurcausedby Earth's atmosphere. The striking launch of these lasers, one from eachoftheeight-metretelescopes at Paranal, is a significant milestone oftheGRAVITY+project—alarge and complex upgrade to ESO’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI).
